Kiki's HW - Assignment 7

1. I interviewed my mom and asked her a lot of questions that I haven’t asked. I learned a lot from the interview, and I know my mom is working very hard in taking care of me. All I want say is thank you mom, I love you.

2. Recently I have seen news saying that over 60% of middle school students in Taiwan are addicted to Facebook. Moreover, the report said that these students obtained most of their information from the site, and that 25% of the students who are using Facebook, spent more than two hours on it everyday. This is a bad situation because students should not spend so much time social networking. I mean of course making friends and communicate with friends is important, but learning is as important as well. And it’s also not good for students to staring at a monitor for so long, it’s bad for their eyes!

3. Yes, there is a huge events coming up in Taiwan, and it’s Taiwan’s 2012 presidential election. This is a very important event for the Taiwanese citizen to participate because this event matters to Taiwan’s future. For now, it is kind hard to predict who will win the election because the current poll for the three candidates is really close. Other than this, I have read a news saying that Taipei just got elected for the 2017 Summer World University Games. This is great news and I am happy because Taiwan needs to participate in more international events like this.

5. I recently try and tested a stuff I like, and I felt happy because of it.

Gao/Bolt's HW - Assignment 7

1. The person who I interviewed is my mother, and here is the conversation:

Mom: I have no ideas. But the person who will keep his promises to the people is the best.
Me: Thank you for your answers.
Mom: You are welcome.
By interviewing my mom, I learned that a president should not only take care of the people, but also, keep his promises.

2. The presidential election of 2012 will be held soon, it is said that Ms.Tsai’s current poll is higher than that of President Ma’s, but let’s wait for one more month to see who will win the election!

3. There is a belief that the world is going to end in 2012. However, some people believe it whereas others don’t. But it is true that our Earth has becoming weaker and weaker every day. If nothing is change and everything remains the same, I think our world is going to end soon even if no one mentions about it.

Rex's HW - Assignment 7

2. In Taiwan, there is big news about the presidential election that’s coming next month. I am anxious too, and I am waiting to see who will win the election. I think the election is very important to our future because of economy right now is not doing well. I also heard a very special news: A fisherman have catches a shark that has only one eye! Someone think this might be fake, but the scientists said it is true, that it’s not a joke.

3.3 Be honest, there is nothing happening, except we are going to have a school anniversary – one of the biggest celebrations of our school. Oh and another thing is that we are waiting for the presidential election that is coming next month.

3.5 Every Taiwanese who’s over the age of twenty can participate in voting. As for the school anniversary, every students will participate.
3.6 It is happening because our school wants to celebrate for its birthday. We are going to have a presidential election because we want our people to have a chance in choosing a good leader.

4. Our government is discussing about a new law. Which stated passengers have to buckle their seatbelt even if they are sitting at the back. They think this is a good law because the law will make people safer. At first, I thought this law is bad because I always think the government only wants money and don’t care about people’s life, but maybe I am wrong.

5. One day, I was going to the washroom in my school, and while I was peeing, I saw a bird walking on the roof, then it pooed. I have never seen a bird pooed like that! How funny!

Eric's HW - Assignment 7

1. I interviewed my brother. I asked him what you like the most, and he said “money”. How funny is that huh?

2. I have seen the news about presidential election that is coming in Taiwan. I think this is a good thing because people should have the right to change the party in control if it is not doing well.

Terry's HW - Assignment 7

1. I interviewed my dad, and asked him a lot of questions. I learned more about him, he is a really cool dad!

2. Recently in Taiwan, there is a lot of news about the presidential election that is coming. The battle is between the two major political parties in Taiwan, the KMT and the DDP. Of course, both parties try to recommend itself, but it’s questionable if they will do as promise. I think they should try their best to achieve their policy, if it’s good, rather than saying and do nothing.

3. As previously mentioned, there is an important presidential election coming in Taiwan. However, if KMT is going to change to DDP, then it is expectable that some of Taiwan’s current policy may change. For Taiwanese people, it is important that they should know a change in government will either make you rich, or poorer.
Friendly suggestion: I think it is a good thing if we have a change in government this year, because the current political party, the KMT, is not doing well. I think it’s time to give DDP a chance to see if they can and will change Taiwan as they promised.

4. Dear penpal:
What do you think about power exchange of political parties?
In my opinion, I think it is a good thing in a democratic society. However, if everything remains the same, then it is probably because more than half of the people are sustain the government.

5. There is something funny occurred lately in my school. Some of my friends stayed together in front of the school, and suddenly a teacher came towards them, ask what are they doing?
You know what’s their reply? They saidWe were just talking about you, then you came towards us, how fantastic! Before the teacher left, he saidI know I am famous, but please do not appreciate me too much.”.

HW#4 Tina

I think they will need help for their medical troubles and a place for them to live in.
There was an earthquake in Ljubljana many years ago, but today if there is an earthquake it's a very small one.
Yes we have donated some money to The Red Cross before.
Have you ever experienced an earthquake or typhoon, what did you do?
How does your country recover from an earthquake or typhoon?

HW#4 Katja

1. Emergency relief workers from all around the world are helping Turkish victim by sending them water, food, medicine and other things to help them survive these hard times. The most important is drinking water, because the quake destroyed plumbing system and infected water. I admire these workers very much!

2. The strongest earthquake on my territory was in 1895. It was a long time ago and I only read about it and saw photos. Whole town Ljubljana was crushed down and many people died. Since then, no such larger natural disaster happened here. Every few years there are some floods on some parts of Slovenia but fortunately not many people die. But there are some families left without houses.

3. Special bank accounts are opened for such families and we've already donated some money for them. Sometimes we gather some old clothes and take them to organization called Karitas, which also provides such help to these people in natural accidents.

HW#4 Petja

1.) Emergency relief workers provide food, clothes, tents,.. But some people steel all of them don't have shelter, so they have to fight the cold night under the blankets and in front of camp fires. I think, that is really nice that there are some people, that are willing to help the people that were hurt in earthquake.

2.) On April 14th, 1895, there was an earthquake that struck the Ljubljana, the capital and largest city in Slovenia. About ten percent of the buildings were damaged or destroyed, although few people died in the destruction. Slovenia is citied on earthquake area; we have about 1000 earthquakes for a year. But they are smaller so we can't feel them.

3.) Yes, we donated to UNICEF. In my school we collect school supplies which we donate to the one who need them. I like to help, because it's nice and if you have enough, why couldn't donate just a little of that to those who can't afford it.

4.) Hey! So i was wondering if any of the natural disasters ever hurt you? And if you could live anywhere on the world, where would it be?

HW#4 Tiona

1. Many countries helped Turkey by sending them money, food , water, clothes and other important things. They also need tents to sleep in because their houses are collapse. I hope they will be fine.
2. Slovenia lies on earthquake area. That means that earthquakes happen every day here but they are not very strong. The last earthquake was today at 5.40 AM near Grosuplje. We also have many floods. The most destroing flood was in year 2007 in Železniki. There were many victims.
3. No, we didn't helped anyone yet.
4. Did you ever be a part of earthquake?
Was there any tsunami in your county because you live on the island?

HW#4 Tjasa

1.  I don't know. Donating money, clothes, food and stuff.
2. Of course there was. The worst earthquake in Ljubljana happened in 1895. There are floods when it rains a lot... The worst happend last year and it was near me.
3.Yes, my family donated money for rebuilding the affected areas.

HW#4 Marija

It is horrible what I just read. The number of victims amazed me. I think it would be horrible for me if this would happened in Slovenia. I think people there right now need a big help . They need a lot of food, something to drink and things like that. In country where I live already happend disaster earthquakes. I think it must be really hard for them right now. Well my mom is really good woman. If she could help she would deffinetly help anyone. Well i wonder if there was any of natural disasters. Have you or your familiy ever experienced typhoon or earthquake?

HW#4 Gregor

Emergency relief workers are helping all Turkish victims by sending them emergency relief items such as food, water, medicine, medical supplies, hygiene kits, winterized tents, kerosene heaters/cook stoves and utensils to thousands of Turkish families who have been affected by the earthquake.

In Slovenia, the strongest earthquake was in 1895. I only read articles about it and I saw some photos. The capital city Ljubljana was crushed and there were a lot of victims. We also had floods in Slovenia in the year 2007. The town called ''Železniki'' was flooded. 3 people died and more than 300 houses were flooded. Every few years there are some floods in Slovenia but not many people die.

We have many organizations to help the victims of disasters. We donate food, water and old clothes to those organizations. There are also special bank accounts opened for those people. We once helped one family. Their house was flooded and we donated some money and toys.

Do you think we can prevent the damage, caused by disasters by inventing some kind of machines which would warn us?
Have you ever been in a natural disaster?

HW#4 Matjaz

1. I could probably donate to one of the many organisations that would then give money to the Turks. I could also donate some clothes.

2. Yes. There was a huge earthquake in 1900s. There are also many floods.

3. My family never donated, because we don't trust organisations. Many people take money for themselves so our help wouldn't reach poor people. But we sometimes go to the concerts that are organised in humanitarian purposes.

HW#4 Gasper

1. They help them by giving them things that they need. They give them food and drinks aswell as medical attention. Those who have friends or family try to relly on them for shelter and the other things.

2. There has never been a earthquake or any natural dissaster where i live. Where i live the most that could happen is an avalanche because i live under a hill. But 100 years ago there was a pretty bad earthquake in our capital city (Ljubljana).

3. I myself never donated money. In 4th grade i belive we donated some books and toys for the children of africa.

HW#4 Sara

1.) The emergency things for victims of the quake are food and drink and some more tents. Some of people have their own tent but they sharing those tent with some relatives. But some people does not have a tent and they are waiting to get one. Many of them need medical help.

2.) In our country are almost every day some smaller earthquakes, which havn't some big implications. The last strong earthquake was in year 2004 in Posočje. From the year 1348 to today there was 13 stronger earthquaken in Slovenia.

3.) No, but I was younger then and I wasn't realy know about earthquake and about victims. But now I would help if I could.

4.) Do you have experiance with earthquake?

HW#4 Peter

There is a lot of victims in Turkey and they need doctors because some of them are seriously injured. I think now they need as much as caring as they can get from other peopple.

Yes in Ljubljana there is every 100 years very strong earthquake that kills a lot of peopple and destroys a lot of bildings. Last earthquake was 120 years ago.

3. We did donate some money in school for poor peopple in Africa and for some peopple in slovenia that cant pay for school books.

HW#4 Anja

There were a lot of crews from other countires that rescued people out of the collapsed buildings. A lot of people need help and Turkish deliverd them tents because their homes are destroyed.
There was an eartquake before I was born. But when it rains a lot there are floods. It happend near me last year.
Of course, my family donated money to help who can't buy food for themselves. I also donated money for children in Africa.

HW#4 Blaz

1. The relief workers provide food water and shelter. They also help prevent sicknes and contageus disseases. I think that they are doing the best the can right now but its just not enough.

2.No. Luckely we have rare earthquakes and natural disasters. The only bad one was about a 100 years ago but it was so bad that we were rebuilding our capital for the next ten years.

3. Yes we often give second hand clothing and some money. My famliy thinks its important that we help those in need and we like to think that they would help us. Our school also gives donations to the needy every year.

HW#4 Emilija

Emergency relief workers are bringing victims food, water and clothes. They are also rescueing the survivors and giving them the care that they need.

In Slovenia natural disasters like earthquakes don't happen very often. If they do they don't cause a lot of damages.

Yes, my family donated money to children in Africa and I gave all of my toys and things that I didn't need or use to children which didn't have them or to the children with diseases.

Report: Turkish Man Freed From Quake Debris

Turkey's state-run news agency says rescuers have pulled out a man alive from the rubble of a collapsed building four days after a powerful earthquake hit eastern Turkey, killing 532 people.
Anatolia news agency says the man is in his late 20s.
Television footage showed the man, surrounded by medics and other emergency workers, being rushed through hospital doors.
Rain and snow in the area is making life miserable for thousands of earthquake survivors.
Emergency officials said 2,300 people were injured and 185 have been rescued from the rubble after Sunday's devastating 7.2-magnitude quake.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
ERCIS, Turkey (AP) — Rain gave way to snow Thursday in eastern Turkey, making life miserable for thousands of earthquake survivors as the death toll from the weekend disaster rose to 534.
Emergency officials said 2,300 people were injured and 185 have been rescued from the rubble after Sunday's devastating 7.2-magnitude quake. Some 2,000 buildings have been destroyed and authorities declared another 3,700 buildings unfit for habitation.
More aid began to reach survivors, with Turkish authorities delivering more tents after acknowledging distribution problems that included saw aid trucks being looted even before they reached Ercis, the hardest-hit town.

Families who did snag a precious aid tent shared them with others. But some people spent a fourth night outdoors huddled under blankets in front of campfires, either waiting for news of the missing or keeping watch over damaged homes.
As survivors gathered pieces of wood to light campfires or stove-heaters, The Red Crescent and several pro-Islamic groups set up kitchens and dished out soup or rice and beans.
Sermin Yildirim, eight months pregnant, was sharing a tent with a family of four who were distant relatives, along with her own twins and husband. Her family was too afraid of returning to their apartment.
"It's getting colder, my kids are coughing. I don't know how long we will have to stay here," Yildirim said. "We were not able to get a tent. We are waiting to get our own."
Muhlise Bakan, 41, was not happy to share her tent with her husband's second wife, Hamide.
"I have four children, she has five," Bakan said. "We were sleeping in separate rooms at our house, and now we are sleeping side by side here."
However, she acknowledged the two women were now "closer" as they struggled together in hard times. Turkish law does not recognize second marriages, but some conservative men in the country's southeast still marry more then one wife in religious ceremonies.
Health problems increased the hardship.
"I am very sick, I need medicine," said Kevsel Astan, 40, who had a kidney transplant four years ago.
She said she was being treated at the state hospital until the quake struck. The damaged hospital was evacuated and doctors were focusing on emergency cases.
Burke Cinar, a sociologist with a Turkish foundation, said the group was trying to get tents for the families of 15 children with leukemia in Ercis.
Looking ahead, Turkey's weather agency predicted intermittent snowfall for the next three days.
